THE "ÞEPEª CASTLE"
(photos with the castle)

Less known today, the building picturesquely called "Þepeº Castle" was built in 1906 with the occasion of the organisation of the General Romanian Exhibition, on the "Campia Libertatii" (Liberty Field), at the celebration of Carol the 1st 40 years of reign.

Yet, the building was meant to be a water tower. As the shape of the reservoirs wasn’t quite aesthetic, the solution was to create a building that unifies artistic and style qualities requested by the organisers. Accordingly, built after architects Petculescu and Schindl’s plans, the building replicated, in small size, the Poenari Fortress, raised by the ruler of Valachia (Tara Romaneasca) in the place named Cheia Argesului, from Lovistea, in Arges County.

Inside the tower of the castle, which is 23 m tall and 9 m in diameter, there is an iron cast reservoir of 200 cubic meters. Using a winding wooden staircase one can reach up to the platform whence he can admire the park and the panorama of Bucharest. A strong counterfort, ended in a wooden verandah, sustains the tower. To the right, there is a serrated stone wall, ended in the corner with another smaller tower.

Since the end of World War I, the castle was turned into a lodge for the Guard Corps guarding the nearby Unknown Soldier’s Tomb, placed in front of the National Military Museum. After the tomb was moved to Marasesti, and the mausoleum of the communist heroes was inaugurated, on the 30th of December 1963, in the close vicinity of the castle, the building in Candiano Popescu Street continued to be used by the military guards.

After 1990, the building was used as Guard Corps for a gendarme unit, designed to guard certain banking institutions in the Capital City.

Since the 30th of December 2004, according to the Government Ordinance no. 1585, Vlad Tepes Castle (6 Gen. Candiano Popescu Street, 4th district), has become the headquarters of the National Office for the Heroes Memory.
