The British Military Cemetery
from Tancabesti The British Military Cemetery is situated at km. 32 on the Bucuresti-Ploiesti motorway. In this place, 90 soldiers rest - 87 airborne forces, 2 soldiers and 1 sailor of the commercial marine - all from the entire territory of the Commonwealth (Great Britain, South Africa, Canada, Australia, New Zeeland). Most of them died during World War II. In the middle of the cemetery there is a monument in the shape of a stone cross on which is superimposed an English sword. Next to this there is a stone memorial with the commemorative text: "This land was generously offered by the Romanian people for a cemetery for the sailors, soldiers and aviators, whose memory is honoured here." At the beginning, the tombs were scattered in different places of Romania, being collected here at the end of the hostilities. On country criteria, the tombs are divided thus: The cemetery is in the custody of the Embassy of Great Britain in Bucharest, this institution supporting the costs of maintenance. Commemorative ceremonies are held at this cemetery on every Heroes Day and on the 11th of November.
