The loss of human lives in the years of the First World War, unheard of until then, was enormous. Romania lost almost one million soldiers and civilians. That is why the survivors had a moral duty to commemorate the ones who perished on the battlefields each year. At a national level, this was established by the Treaty of Versailles. This document, signed by the countries that took part in this war, stipulated, among others, the obligation of looking after the tombs of the soldiers buried on the territories of those countries and the commemorative works of art dedicated to them. The materialization of the stipulations in the Versailles Treaty took place with the Decree of Law no. 169/ 4th of May 1920, that established that the Heroes' Commemorative Day should be celebrated on the occasion of the Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ. Thus Romania became the first country that assimilated the foreign heroes to the national ones. This day was declared national holiday of the Romanian people, and an important role was played by the Society "Tombs of the Heroes Fallen in the War" (founded in 1919) and transformed at a later date into the Society "Heroes' Cult". Thanks to this organisation, under Queen Marie's high protectorate, The Unknown Hero's Tomb was inaugurated in 1923, placed in front of the National Military Museum in Carol Park.
